Been working =D
I guess I’ve kind of done a lot since i last posted anything.. But here it is.

I’m fairly sure the last time it was only the first level and the floor haha..
anyway… Since then I framed the walls for the second story (to be later refered to as the ‘Apartment’) it contains a door and two windows.
I still have to:
-Frame the windows in the front of the apartment of which there are three.
-I’m fairly sure it needs to be fireblocked.
-Make sure the ceiling joists will accept drywall
-Finish framing the dormer
The roof and ceiling proved very difficult for me since I will admit I have no actual knowledge of how to do any of this. I spent the last week searching around on the internet for insight into how I was to tackle this unique roof.. I think what I ended up with is pretty spot on.. but suggestions would be great if anyone has any?
The roof still has a lot of work that needs to be done to it though.
I still have to:
-Put a board around the edges.
-Make a couple lookouts for places where the roof overhangs.
-Put in Purlins
-Frieze block it.
-Frame an Access to the attic.
I’m sure there’s much more to do than what i listed but i don’t wanna bore anyone.. in any case, It all has a lot of blocking to go through. so i’ll be busy working on all that. I’m hoping to get inside it soon and throw up some interior walls. But the ext. Stairs come first. So once i finish up with the ceiling and roof, I’ll start on those.
Also I’ll post pictures with layers turned off
If anyone wants to see more pictures just tell me and I’ll post em. =D
One last post and then I’m done for a while.
I’m just this thing up to speed is all.. lol
Anyway, The 3D model is about 2 days in. I haven’t been working very quickly at all but it’s whatever.. I’m personally in no rush to get it finished.
The first on is a shot from the top. The foundation is there and the garage walls are framed in. Including doors, windows, and garage door. This represents a stage of my build. as my model will have accurate framing to scale. In essence anyone who knows how to work on houses could open up the walls and understand what’s going on.

This one shows it from below so you can see all the joists that make up the ceiling.

that’s all I got up to now though. There’s a lot more to be done until the end of this project. Next I’ll work on the second floor Framing and the interior framing therein. I’ll update the blog when I feel necessary.
Fractions Anyone??
With all three drawings I had I really didn’t have a lot to work with.To start this project I wanted to create a detailed 3d model in my computer to help me estimate material quantity and hopefully solve some problems for me later down the road. I knew the structure was 20’x23’ but this doesn’t include the width of the stairs so I needed a way to find that measurement, and countless others and it came in the most unlikely of forms.
I’m lucky and have Photoshop. So whenever i need to crop images or any of that simple stuff I rely on it to make it easy on me. When i decided to start making my prototype I saved the images and cropped them to just include the outer edges of the walls. I noticed something awesome when I looked at the image size.
It stands to reason that a scale drawing will be at the same scale no matter how large or small it is. So if the side of the drawing that’s 20ft is say, 240 pixels on the screen, it should also stand to reason that each ‘foot’ in the drawing is represented by 12 pixels. Using this newly discovered trick I started to pull dimensions off all the drawings to a great degree of success. Whenever i needed to know a distance i cropped the part i wanted to measure and used the ratio to determine it’s length in inches. It was a lot of fractions…
Plans
I have very few pictures to work with and from them I have to figure out all the dimensions in order to put them into reality. In this case I have a drawing of the garage level showing the stairs, the apartment level showing the stairs, and a rear elevation showing the pitch of the roof. I also have the picture I showed last time but that doesn’t really do much for me getting dimensions.
Here’s the Garage Level

Here’s the Apartment above it.

Aaand the rear elevation

Obviously because these aren’t my plans I’m just saying I don’t own them nor do intend to. I don’t feel like I have to buy them if I’m just doing a personal project. In any case I hope no one tries to sue me. But I think i’ll be alright.
I need a place to tinker.
I seem to do all kinds of projects all the time and when I’m done with them i always wish i had documented the process.. I’ve never really been a blogger or anything but it seems like a good way to do just that. So in lieu of the new project I’ve started I felt i should give this a try. I’m not really sure if I’ve got the right idea.. but here goes.
My project comes in the form of a scale home at a ratio of 1:8 inches. It’s something that, growing up, I really wanted to do. I gave it a try here and there but I lacked sufficient knowledge and skill to get it all together correctly. At this point in my life I have gained what I feel is enough of both to give it a good go. Hopefully I’m satisfied with the end result because it’s looking to be a lot of work.
Goals for this project are as follows.
:Build the model as close to code as possible.
-This mostly goes for the framing. I know some things are just over my head. =P
:Employ the use of real materials
-Wall studs will be ripped from real dimensional lumber, vapor barriers and roof
flashing will be used, the structure will sit on a concrete slab.
:Working interior/exterior lighting
-I’m planning on using LED’s to light up the house.
:Working Garage Door
-As the plans I am using call for a Garage door.
:Removable Roof.
-What’s the point of finishing the interior if you can’t really see it?
So far I’m in the beginning stages of this project. Learning what I can, gathering materials and choosing plans. Usually I like to design it myself. I feel it’s an important part of the creative process so to speak; it gives it more meaning, really. However I find it difficult in this case because I have the constraint of having limited space in which to build this model. In this case, the 1:8 inch scale means that every foot is one and a half inches. That might not seem like much but when you think that a small house is usually 50 or 60 feet in any direction. that becomes a ridiculously large model. So in order to keep it small I was pretty constrained to how large my structure could be. I couldn’t design something i was happy with so I went to the internet to solve my problem.
A week or so of plan searching lead me to a Garage/Apartment house plan meant to be more of an addition than a separate dwelling. it met my size constraint being 23ftx27ft (34.5”x40.5” @scale) so I started studying the drawings. But I’ll probably start that in a different post. However I’d feel like a jerk writing all this without a little bit to look at. So…
This is what I will be building.
